The area has appeared regularly in film and literature. Dickens used it to set the scenes in many of his novels – Gray's Inn (David Copperfield), Little Dorrit in Bleeding Heart Yard and Fagin’s Den on Saffron Hill. St. Bartholomew the Great church featured in films such as ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ and ‘Shakespeare in Love’.

Shops and banks are located around Holborn Circus and the bustling street market, Leather Lane, operates daily at lunchtimes. Nearby Exmouth Market has a colourful mixture of boutiques and shops, as well as the many bars, cafés and restaurants for which it is well known.
